Some of the most important adverse effect of tourism in Jammu and Kashmir are:
Despite all these merits of tourism, it has many adverse effects on the society. For example, cultural pollution, deterioration in morality and increase in the rate of crimes.
1. The introduction and imitation of foreign ways of life in the developing societies living in isolation and relative isolation bring about change in attitudes, values and social behaviour of the people. Unfortunately, the younger generation is the most susceptible to the pressure of the demonstration effect created by tourists.
The youths attempt to imitate the lifestyle of visiting tourists. Glimpses of copied western culture may be seen in the popularity of jeans, western pop music and rock dance. As the two cultures come into contact, the local values get transformed, ultimately leading to cultural pollution.
2. The second setback occurs in the form of commercialization of art. Tourists seek local artifacts as souvenirs. The heavy demand for typical artifacts leads to bulk production for the poorly crafted works.
3. Close proximity and interaction with tourists influence the food habits of those who are associated with tourist industry, e.g., guides, Shikarawalas, Taxi operators, Houseboat owners, Pony-keepers and people working in hotels and guest houses. Some of these workers have indulged in gambling delinquency and narcotic drug-trafficking.
It is generally believed that tourists are largely responsible for increase in liquor consumption, drug-addiction and smoking in the region. The morality has loosened and some of the youngsters are becoming increasingly permissive in their behaviour, reading morally disgusting literature and enjoying obscene films and club life.
Consequently, the age-old sound cultural fabric has been threatened and the society feels frustrated. If these negative impacts of tourism are not checked the cultural ethos of the people of Jammu and Kashmir will be damaged beyond reparation.
